2021 Focus On Practice Meeting

As the new year progresses, it is time for our traditional “Focus on Practice” (FOP) meeting, which will have a similar design as the virtual summit of which many of our members attended quite a few sessions last fall.

Based on the poll we did in January among members, we chose the umbrella topic Designing Learning Ecosystems, with a focus on how to best foster/support learner-driven learning and scale upskilling and reskilling across large organizations.  Digital learning architectures play a big role here, as does a culture of “learnership” anchored in organizational structures and mechanisms.

The event will include six weekly sessions over the months of March and April and feature insights and practices from corporate L&D leaders from Allianz Group, Daimler, IBM, SAP, Sberbank, Siemens, and UBS.

Member Interest Group on the New Work Model

On January 26, ECLF Fellow and former Allianz SVP Sylvain Newton kicked off the ECLF Member Interest Group (MIG) about the New Work Model. Over the next 4 months, the group will focus on the organizational and cultural implications of remote and hybrid work models that have been triggered by the pandemic.

Group members are:

  • Achim Wolter (Baloise Group)
  • Torsten Schmeichel (BASF)
  • Kirsten Weisbender (Commerzbank)
  • Raghu Krishnamoorthy (formerly CHRO, General Electric)
  • Roberto Gagliardi (Generali)
  • Paul Signarello (Stellantis, formerly FCA Group)
  • Pia-Sophie Wittemann (Merck)
  • Jasmine Keel (Swiss Re)

The group will share the results of its work with the larger ECLF community. In the interim, recordings of the group's zoom sessions are available in the Archive section of the ECLF member platform.

Please visit the MIG's website to learn more details about this initiative.

2020 Focus on Practice Meeting at Comau-FCA in Turin

Comau, a global leader in automotive robotics, and part of the FCA Group of companies, has kindly agreed to host our 12th Focus on Practice meeting in Turin, Italy To maximize the experience of the context, we will meet where the flow of work takes place - directly in the Maserati plant.

Building on conversations we had within an ECLF Member Interest Group, we are going to deep-dive into the experiences of Comau and FCA in leveraging Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and robotics to seemlessly integrate learning into the flow of work. We will also take a closer look at the interplay of formal and informal learning.

Please save the date in your calendar, and stay tuned for a more detailed agenda and information about logistics.

2019 Summit Documentation is now available

Asd always, we have summarized the essence of our conversation from the recent global summit in a comprehensive document, which is now available in the archive section of the ECLF platform.

Once again a big Thank You to our generous host Airbus who opened for us the doors of their fabulous university - and to all members and friends who took the time to swing by and share their perspectives.

ECLF Virtual Round Table | Driving Organizational Change

Our 1st ECLF Virtual Round Table (VRT) focused on Driving Organizational Change – a theme closely linked to recent ECLF discussions on Digital Transformation and its implications for organizational re-invention.  ECLF members from Airbus, Cisco, Siemens, and ThyssenKrupp shared their perspectives in an informal fireside chat format.

For a brief overview, you may want to check out the executive summary of highlights, or view the video recording of the session.

NEW: Virtual ECLF Round Tables

To enhance the value of our network, we are launching a new online meeting format - facilitated virtual ECLF Round Tables which will feature a carefully curated group of 3-5 panelists who will share their perspectives and experiences on issues that are relevant to the future of L&D.

The panels will consist mainly of ECLF members, and their composition will change depending on the topic we discuss. Occasionally we will also invite an external thought leader to spark the conversation. The sessions will be open
in a listening only mode for interested employees of all ECLF member companies as well as for invited guests, with the possibility for virtual Q&A. We plan for 5-6 of such Round Tables per year.

To align the topics of the sessions as closely as possible to your areas of professional interest, we are conducting a quick polling exercise to learn about preferences. The results will be an indicator for what is currently on the minds of senior L&D executives.

2019 Annual Summit | Save the Date

I am thrilled to announce that Airbus is going to host our 2019 ECLF Summit from June 17-19, 2019 at their stunning Leadership University Campus in Toulouse, France. Topic-wise, we intend to focus on Leading and Learning in Networked Organizations, with special emphasis on shaping the dynamics of the extended enterprise and larger business environment. Your input and ideas are very welcome. Please save the date and stay tuned for more information and updates in the coming months.

11th Focus on Practive Meeting @Deutsche Bahn

Jenny Zeller, head of Deutsche Bahn Academy, has been so kind to invite us to Potsdam for our next Focus on Practice meeting, which will take place on January 23/24 2019. You will find  details about the agenda and logistics in the event section of our website, where you also can download the detailed program. if you would like to attend, please register via the Eventbrite portal, latest by December 20.

The meeting will provide the opportunity to deep-dive into the learning and transformation challenges of Deutsche Bahn, with special emphasis on the changing role of HR and the interplay of L&D with other units that help to drive innovation and change. In particular, we will tackle questions such as

  • how to support a workforce of 300,000 people on their way to the digital future?
  • what is the role and contribution of IT-related  efforts in the overall scenario of digital transformation? How does it relate do L&D?
  • How can we best structure the collaboration with various entities that drive change?

In addition to the above, we will also have the opportunity to discuss with Jenny and her team how they experience the first months of working as a holacracy, in total self-organization – a bold move the DB Academy took earlier this year.

2018 ECLF Global Summit – September 12-14, 2018, hosted by Daimler

Our plans to hold our 14th annual ECLF summit at Roca Group’s headquarter in Barcelona were unfortunately derailed by the political turbulences in Catalonia as the situation in the region remains volatile. It’s a great testament to the flexibility and openness of our community that Daimler’s CLO Oliver Fischer spontaneously offered to host us at the company’s Automobile Museum in Stuttgart. - Thank you Oliver!

The venue is unfortunately already booked during our traditional July time slot. We therefore have moved this year's annual summit to September 12-14Please mark your calendars accordingly. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

ECLF Partners with "Developing Leaders" Magazine and "Ideas for Leaders"

Most of you have met Roddy Millar, who was so kind to help write the syntheses of last year’s summit and our recent FOP meeting. We are intensifying our relationship through a strategic partnership with Roddy’s ventures, which will add significant value to our network. The partnership is twofold:

  • Starting immediately, ECLF will enjoy a dedicated section within “Developing Leaders”, a premier magazine on current thinking about leadership and organization, with about 60,000 subscribers from across the globe. The section will feature practices from member companies and inform about ECLF activities that may be of interest for a larger community. Check out the inaugural article about Bertelsmann’s Creative Leadership program. BTW, as part of our agreement, members will receive a significant discount on print magazine subscriptions.
  • In addition, ECLF members will also receive privileged access to “Ideas for Leaders, a carefully curated and growing library of cutting edge management research. “Ideas for Leaders” selects outstanding articles from leading academic journals and “translates” them into actionable ideas that can be readily implemented by executives.

We have created a special partnership section on our website which will provide access to these resources.

Global Survey about Organizational Social Media Literacy (OSML)

In the next days you will receive an invitation to participate in the Global OSML Index project – the inaugural research initiative by the Center for the Future of Organization at the Drucker School of Management which I have briefly introduced at our last summit.

Through this project we want to measure the degree to which companies and their leaders leverage social technology to shape their business processes for the challenges of the 21stcentury. Please be so kind to support this initiative by not only participating in the survey yourself but also by inviting as many leaders as possible in your organization to share their perspective in this critical component of digital leadership capabilities. If you want to learn more about the project, click here.

Keep your eyes open for the survey invitation mail which includes more detailed information.  BTW, ECLF members will receive a free executive summary of the results of this project.
